Biological Sciences
Biological Sciences encompasses the study of life in all its forms. Students in the Ecology specialization can work with ecologists who are also microbiologists, plant biologists, or zoologists, as well as ecologists in other colleges and academic departments. The Biomedical Science specialization is appropriate for students planning careers as chiropractors, dentists, medical doctors, optometrists, pharmacists, physical therapists, physician assistants, or podiatrists, or those planning to attend graduate school in a human-health discipline. The Biology Education specialization is offered in conjunction with the College of Education and prepares students for careers as secondary-school biology teachers.
Microbiology
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, a large and diverse group of organisms that exist as single cells or cell clusters. The science of microbiology includes the study of microbial growth, biochemistry, genetics, and ecology, the relationship of microorganisms to other organisms, virology and immunology. At the undergraduate level, courses in general microbiology, molecular biology, medical microbiology, immunology, prokaryotic diversity, bacterial and viral genetics, bacterial physiology and biochemistry, and biotechnology are available to assist in your career and job-oriented goals.
Plant Biology
Plant Biology is the study of plants and their interactions with their environments. The Plant Biology faculty maintains expertise in plant anatomy, biodiversity, conservation, ecology, evolution, morphology, phylogeny, physiology, phytochemistry, and systematics. The Plant Biology Program offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for students interested in the scientific study of plants.
Zoology
The Zoology program offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for students interested in the scientific study of animals. The faculty maintains expertise in ecology and ecosystem studies; genetics, evolution and population biology; fisheries biology and aquaculture; environmental toxicology; and wildlife ecology and management. The Zoology major at SIUC prepares students for the following career paths: animal biology (basic research and graduate study in animal ecology and evolution), environmental biology (including toxicology and contamination ecology), fisheries biology and aquatic conservation, veterinary medicine and animal health, wildlife biology and conservation and nonscience careers with a background in zoology, including zookeeping.
